Drive arrays are useful for integrating a larger number of hard disk drives into a smaller space. Paramount to the design  (especially for 3.5" hard disk drives), of the array is cooling, conduction through a metal chassis combined with fan forced convectional cooling is a pre-requisite.

2.5" hard disk drives generally cope better without as much cooling due to the lower power consumption which results in less heat being generated.
